Nasal polyps: causes and symptoms. The most appropriate treatments and natural remedies to reduce or stop the growth of nasal polyps. Useful tips to prevent nasal polyps from forming.

There are several causes that can determine nasal respiratory obstructions; among the most common we mention the formation of nasal polyps. These are nodules that form on the lining of the nasal cavities or sinuses that affect, in particular, individuals intolerant to aspirin or asthmatic or allergic patients.

Nasal polyps, symptoms

The size of the polyps is variable; when they are small they may not cause any problems. In other cases, nasal polyps can block the nasal cavity or sinuses and cause the following complications:

  • difficulty in breathing
  • tendency to snore
  • headache
  • runny nose, stuffy nose
  • postnasal discharge
  • loss of sense of smell
  • feeling of discomfort in the face
  • pain and pressure in the face and nose area
  • sleep apnea
  • insomnia

This disorder should in no way be underestimated. At the first symptoms it is essential to consult a specialist to determine the severity of the problem and what is the most appropriate treatment based on the specific condition.

Nasal polyps, causes

Typically, nasal polyps form when the mucosa is constantly inflamed; this condition is generally classified as chronic if the signs and symptoms of inflammation last for more than 3 months

It is not yet clear how chronic inflammation can cause the formation of polyps, but the response of the immune system in the mucous membrane seems to contribute in a tangible way. In any case, some factors have been identified that certainly increase the risk:

  • severe allergies not treated properly
  • asthma
  • prolonged infections
  • sensitivity to aspirin
  • chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa
  • imbalance of the blood vessels that carry blood to the mucosa
  • anatomical dysfunctions that lead to pressure on the nasal cavities
  • allergic rhinitis.

Nasal polyps, care and treatment

Sometimes the definitive cure consists in extracting them through surgery, (even if it is a disorder that can be recurrent). This decision depends on some factors: number of polyps, their location and the extent of inflammation. Generally, interventions take place by endoscopy and by polypectomy.

In many cases, fortunately, the therapy is based only on drugs that can reduce their size or even eliminate them. The doctor may prescribe the use of corticosteroids, antihistamines or, in the case of bacterial infections, the use of antibiotics.

Nasal polyps, natural remedies

As already mentioned, it is essential to rely on the care of the expert. In the meantime, some natural remedies may prove effective to reduce or stop the growth of nasal polyps.

Saline solution for nasal washes

The saline solution can really prove effective against respiratory obstruction; it helps to purify and decongest the nasal passages, eliminating the allergens that can cause the appearance of nasal polyps. For the preparation here's how to proceed:

  1. In a bowl, pour 5 grams of sea salt and 200 ml of hot water then mix the ingredients until a homogeneous solution is obtained
  2. Pour the solution into a dropper and apply a few drops directly inside the nasal cavity so that the liquid circulates in the nasal cavity
  3. Repeat the treatment in both nostrils several times a day.

Tea tree oil

Thanks to its high antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, healing and anti-inflammatory action, tea tree oil is an excellent natural remedy against nasal polyps.

Remember, however, that this remedy can only be performed topically. Better if diluted with hot water. It must be applied following the same procedures as the previous treatment.

C vitamin

The consumption of fruits containing vitamin C such as oranges, strawberries, grapefruit and lemon strengthens the immune system. Furthermore, these plants contain bioflavonoids, essential substances for the health of tissues, the nasal mucosa and blood vessels.

Suffumigi

This simple technique, which consists of inhaling steam. It is particularly suitable for clearing the nasal passages and reducing the secretion of mucus. To perform this treatment, you need water and a medicinal plant, such as eucalyptus or mint leaves. Here's how to proceed:

  1. Pour the water into a saucepan, bring to a boil and add a few eucalyptus or mint leaves
  2. Transfer the liquid into a basin then inhale the steam it releases, covering your head with a towel. The inhalations must be deep. Do the treatment until the water cools down.

Nasal polyps, prevention

Unfortunately, it is not possible to prevent the formation of nasal polyps with absolute certainty, but we can follow some prevention strategies to reduce the probability.

  • Don't overlook conditions such as allergies, asthma, sinusitis and rhinosinusitis
  • Avoid exposure to irritated factors, such as allergens, pollutants, cigarette smoke (active and passive), ...
  • Wash your hands regularly and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle
  • Humidify the air in the house regularly
  • Carry out frequent nasal washes with physiological solution in case of excess mucus.
