There shark cartilage is a food supplement that we can find on the market in various formats. “Carticin”, “Cartilade” and “BeneFin” are among the best known. It is a product of animal origin that can be obtained by drying and then powdering the skeleton of some fish belonging to the Superorder Selachimorpha, mainly caught in the Indian Ocean.

Shark cartilage: use

Although for the psoriasis treatment and the reduction of arthritic pain, if it can be used topically, this supplement is normally taken orally. It can be particularly useful for the reduction of arthritic pain and psoriasis, or to accelerate the healing of wounds, to reduce ocular complications and against enteritis. There is also a use in the context of the reduction of growth of Kaposi's sarcoma. It can be considered an "alternative" or adjuvant method.

Shark cartilage: effectiveness

There are several studies that want to test the effectiveness of this substance on various issues. For example, for the treatment of macular degeneration it is suggested to use it, for a period of 4 weeks, because it could improve or stabilize the visual capacity.

As for therheumatoid arthritis, it is often combined with chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine sulfate and camphor and applied to the skin. Camphor certainly has a very powerful effect, so it is not easy to understand the contribution made by the other ingredients, including shark cartilage.

For the treatment of psoriasis it can be taken both orally and topically to try to decrease itching.
In 1992 there was talk of a possible effect in the treatment of cancer, with the release of the book "Sharks Don't Get Cancer". There are some experts who believe that shark cartilage can be effective in decreasing the Kaposi's sarcoma but data obtained from scientific research show that taking it orally has no benefit in people with cancer (lymphomas, breast, colon, lung, prostate, advanced brain tumors)

Taking into account the less advanced forms, there are not enough specific studies available on the effectiveness of shark cartilage while in case of advanced renal cell carcinoma, there is the possibility that, by administering the Neovastat extract - AE-941 orally, an increase in survival is achieved.

Shark cartilage and the environment

The name of this substance suggests that there are animals in the middle, animals that must be sacrificed to obtain it. These are sharks that already came hunted for the fin trade. Even if the consumption of shark cartilage does not reach frightening levels, the consequences that their diffusion has on the number of sharks present on our planet are frightening. Slowly they are decreasing inexorably.

Shark Cartilage: doses

It is very important to stick to the indicated doses because shark cartilage contains some potentially toxic molecules that may have a link with the onset of Alzheimer's disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The main danger concerns mercury but there are other less known and toxic elements of environmental contaminants that we can often find in large fish.

The right dose is not unique, it varies depending on many factors including age, state of health, any diseases or other conditions. Usually everything is indicated on the label and it is very important not to be fooled by the fact that it is a product of natural origin. It does not mean that it is necessarily non-toxic, but there are some maximum quantities that are indicated because if we stick to them, this substance turns out to be "Probably safe". Orally, it can be used for up to 40 months, topically for up to 8 weeks.

Shark cartilage: side effects

Shark cartilage tastes bad, but that's not the problem. The risk of using this supplement concerns the likely occurrence of a disorder such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, high blood pressure, dizziness, hyperglycemia, high blood calcium and fatigue.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is better to avoid taking cartilage because it is not yet clear what effects it can do, better not risk it. A verified effect, on the other hand, concerns calcium levels that could increase in a really excessive way, so those who already have this problem better stay away from it.

Shark cartilage and law

There have been measures in the past that have involved the distribution and sale of this product as a treatment or cure for cancer. In 2004, the producer "Lane Labs" was ordered to stop advertising "BeneFin" due to insufficient scientific research regarding its efficacy on cancer. For this reason, the FDA has ordered Lane Labs to pay financial compensation to all purchasers of the product.
