There phlogosis it's a'inflammation of our organism, as a response of the immune system to protect it against infections and injuries. Its purpose is to locate and remove damaged tissues so that the body can begin a recovery towards full well-being.

But why can inflammation occur? Why does inflammation occur? How are they diagnosed and recognized?

What is inflammation

There phlogosis, understood as a condition of inflammation, occurs as the body's natural response to injury and external attacks.

In particular, acute inflammation is a response of the immune system that lasts only a few days, and usually contributes to the recovery of the body's full functions, although frequently accompanied by a series of unpleasant and annoying sensations, such as can occur in case of pharyngitis pain or pain or itching after an insect bite.

Inflammation is often identified by the presence of erythema, swelling, physical pain or excessive heat in one part of the body. Although annoying, these conditions have their usefulness, being responses of the immune system aimed at protecting the body from infections and injuries. In short, the purpose of this reaction is to localize and remove the tissues affected by these "attacks", so that the body can complete its recovery and regeneration.

If acute inflammation persists, it will become chronic inflammation, which can last for several years or even for a lifetime.

Is inflammation painful?

We have already mentioned how our body's reaction to infections and trauma can be of various types. In its acute phases, it is possible that pain can disturb the regular course of daily life in various ways, also preventing the performance of "basic" tasks and, therefore, one's ordinary routine.

For example, some people may experience pain when lifting objects, climbing stairs, walking or running, and even when standing still.

Why inflammation occurs

There are several causes of inflammatory pain, such as the attack of pathogens such as bacteria, viruses or fungi; external injuries, such as scratches, or those caused by foreign objects (for example, a thorn in a finger); and, again, the effects of chemicals or radiation.

The swelling, called edema, is mainly caused by the accumulation of fluids outside the blood vessels. Arthritis is another possible cause, as it leads to permanent inflammation of the joints. The inflammation can be very painful, since the irritation causes the deterioration of the cartilage (the spongy tissue that protects the joints).

How long does the inflammation last?

It is difficult to accurately estimate how long the inflammation may last. However, it can be anticipated, albeit in summary, that acute inflammation is an immune response that usually lasts only a few days and is beneficial for healing, although it is usually accompanied by unpleasant sensations such as itching and physical discomfort and, at times , psychological.

In any case, the next time you suffer from it, try to look at this condition with a little "benevolence": as we have mentioned several times in the last few lines, in fact, these reactions occur when the immune system tries to protect the body and organs from infection and injury. In short, its goal is to promote healing, preparing our body to react more positively.

In this sense, we highlight that prostaglandins, the chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, become the protagonists of this process. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) act precisely to prevent the body from producing more prostaglandins, which helps reduce inflammation.

Symptoms and diagnosis of inflammation

Usually there are five signs of acute inflammation, such as erythema, heat, swelling, pain and loss of function.

This last symptom, functional loss, occurs as a result of pain that limits mobility or as a result of severe inflammation that prevents movement of the affected area.

As far as the diagnosis is concerned, we highlight that some cases of inflammation are actually very mild and affect small areas of the body, without causing much pain and often resolving on their own or facilitating healing with a little rest. However, the inflammation can also affect large areas and be painful, indicating the presence of a more serious problem, which requires medical treatment.

Of course, in these cases, or in any case in the event of some doubt about one's actual condition, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
