Ducks, geese, turkeys and guinea fowlthey can be beautiful birds to raise in the countryside. When it comes toduck breedingit refers to different species: there are many ducks bred in captivity.

The breeding of ducks has several purposes. They can be reared for meat, liver and egg production. There is no lack of breeding for hunting (duck hunting is a hunting activity) or for ornamental purposes. Those who have a garden pond could enrich it with the presence of domestic ducks.

Duck breeding: tips for breeding domestic ducks (Muscovy ducks and other selections). From duck eggs to food.

Domestic duck and wild duck

Captive bred ducks become from two species ofwild ducks: the Chairina moschata (from which the Muscovy duck or musk duck derives) and thewild duckproperly called, the species Anas platyrhynchos. The wild duck has given rise to all domestic ducks, except for theMuscovy duck.

The cures that we will see are perfect for those who intend to start a little oneMuscovy duck breeding.

Why keep ducks?

The dwarf duck is often chosen to be reared for ornamental purposes, inside an educational farm, in an agritourism context or in a small country farmhouse.

Raising the duck and not the classic chickens has several advantages. First of all, the duck does not damage the garden. While hens and chickens scratch around everywhere, the ducks are calmer and hunt in a targeted way larvae, insects, molluscs… they are tireless in the search for insects.

In case of puddles or ponds, it raids the larvae, eliminating the problem of mosquitoes in the bud. L'duckit grows very quickly, is less sensitive to atmospheric agents and sudden changes in temperature ... In addition, if hens and chickens need a "chicken coop", the duck does not need shelter. Forraise ducks in the gardenyou just need to place a DIY hut made with reeds or straw.

Theducksthey are very rustic, they are not sensitive to particular diseases. If badly managed they can get cholera and pneumonia. Unlike guinea fowl and other poultry that must be vaccinated against pseudopest, ducks do not need this vaccine.

Duck eggs

Theduck eggsthey can compete on an equal footing with those of hen. There are breeds of ducks selected precisely for the production of eggs. In addition, the duck remains productive until the 5th year of life while laying hens can lose production efficiency already after the second year of breeding.

Mallard ducks selected for the production ofeggsthey exceed in number the quantity of eggs laid even by the most selected laying hens. The duck egg is also considerably larger than the chicken one: it weighs about 70 grams.

The duck egg can be used for direct consumption, in pastry or for the production of fresh pasta.

The duck eggs they are not as large as goose eggs but are still considerably larger than hen's eggs: 5.9 × 4.1 cm. They have a hard white shell.

Duck: breeding and care

The duck moult is more rapt than that of the hen. It occurs towards the beginning of autumn. By mid-summer, however, the activities ofreproductionuntil it ceases completely with the end of the summer.

What must never be missing for the duck is a body of water. Even in summer, when water supplies tend to dry up, it is advisable to ensure that there are pools containing clean water.

For duck farming it is necessary to have a large grazing area and good quantities of food available. The duck has a high food requirement. In the summer, theanimalsthey must have a shaded area. Plenty of fresh, clean water should never be missing.

Grazing allows the ducks to peck insects, worms and larvae present in the soil so as to expand the diet. The duck's diet should be based on corn and other grains.

Breeding begins in February in the south and towards the end of March in the center-north. It continues until July-August. For the nest, the female adapts: she uses the soil, tree hollows, bushes ... the natural nest is made up of twigs and feathers that the female duck detaches from her chest. In summer, the chicks need the heat of the female duck only for 15 days. For the reproduction of the duck in the colder periods it is important to have a heated lamp and to ensure proper incubation of the eggs.

The nest can contain from 5 to 15 eggs. The female hatches for a period of time ranging from 26 to 28 days. The female, after hatching, teaches the youngducklingsto swim and feed.
